Ben Eklund – Union County Sheriffs Office

WAXHAW, NC – Ben Eklund describes himself as one of the few people in Union County that were actually born and raised here. After graduating from high school, Ben joined the Army. Even at a young age, he knew that his career choice would guide him into the military or police work.  After serving  his country, he came back to Union County and worked in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff Office.  Having a family connection to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, he knew that he wanted to transfer departments sooner rather than later and within about one year was able to make that change.

During his seven year tenure with the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Ben has been promoted to detective and is currently working in the investigations bureau. When asked about his certifications or specialties, he responded that he is a two decade college student and in February of 2023 he will be completing his degree in Social and Criminal Justice.

Ben told me that he doesn’t have much free time, but when he does, he enjoys practicing Brazilian jiu jitsu, reading historical fiction and outdoors activities, especially hiking. His favorite food is sushi and he likes the all you can eat deal at Mr. Tokyo.

When Ben has the opportunity to get away, he enjoys spending time in the Murrells Inlet/Garden City at a family home. He likes the area and that it has a vacation vibe but is not too tourist oriented.

I asked Ben what his ultimate job would be if he could not be a police officer and he went back to his roots and said he would probably be in the military and then retire in six years. Although I am sure he did well in the Army, the citizens of Union County are lucky to have Ben on their side to help with the investigation of local crimes.
