The Humane Society of Union County (HSUC) is “Helping those who can’t help themselves.” Deborah Zappa, President of the Humane Society of Union County, explains, “Pets cannot speak or fend for themselves. We believe it is our responsibility to do that for them. They are put here on earth to comfort us and we are given the opportunity to show our goodness and compassion by assisting and loving these beautiful animals.”
“Our spay/neuter clinic is tiny and the need is great. We cannot adopt our way out of the over-population problem. We have launched our “Raise the Ruff” campaign to obtain the funds to build a larger clinic. We are asking the public to donate to this fund so that we might build a larger clinic and eventually double the number of surgeries performed which is greatly needed in Union County. We have many pet owners calling for appointments and we need a larger facility to accommodate the responsible pet owners of our county.”
“We are a humane society “without walls” so we rely on the kindness of those who open their hearts and homes to foster and provide a nurturing environment for the homeless pets of our area. If they have been abused or neglected, medical treatments may be needed. Being in a foster home provides feedback regarding their needs and the type of family in which they will best fit. We learn if they are good with children, cats, love walks, or other quirks. We also try to crate train, teach manners, and let them know they can trust they are safe and will be protected and loved from now on. “
“We also try to help members of the community who would not be able to keep their pets without assistance in the way of pet food or assistance in getting their pets spayed or neutered. We operate a pet pantry and have a fund named “Spay it Forward” which are both totally dependent on donations from the public. Whatever donations we get, we pass on! The Humane Society of Union County receives NO funding from any national, state, or local source. We are totally dependent upon donations from the public. Which is why we have learned a trick from our doggies; how to beg!!!”
The HSUC has Adoption Events every Saturday from 10am to 1pm at the HSUC play yard which is located at 4015 Waxhaw Highway (Highway 75). Every October, they host the very fun “Paws Casino” fundraiser. “It is our annual signature event and extremely enjoyed by those who attend. It is a sell out every year so watch for tickets to go on sale and get yours early!! We will need individuals and businesses to sponsor the event and donate silent auction items. Anyone who can do that is asked to call us and we will gratefully get in touch with you!”
“Donations to the Humane Society of Union County general fund are used for the greatest need, or to the medical fund for our pets, to the Spay it Forward program or to the Raise the Ruff fund. In addition to financial assistance, we always need more foster homes.” Says Zappa. Please contact the Humane Society of Union County to find out how you can donate or become a foster home.
