CHARLOTTE – In NC, the process to get your Concealed Carry Handgun (CCH) Permit is as follows. You have to first find a place to take the CCH Permit class. The class is 8 hours long. You have to shoot 30 rounds in the class at 3, 5, & 7 yards. It’s up to the Instructor on how well your marksmanship has to be. There is also a 20 question exam. Instructors are allowed to create their own exam, however, most instructors use the 20 question one the state provides. Some classes may have as many as 100 students in them and others may only have 8 to 12 students in them. Smaller classroom settings are much easier to ask questions in and are more relaxing for the 8 hours.
After the class, you will be given a certificate. You will have to schedule a time to get your fingerprints done at your local Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office will take the certificate you were given in class. You will have an application to fill out. Once all that is done at the Sheriff’s Office, the time clock starts. The average time it takes for your CCH permit to come in is 2 to 3 months. Smaller Counties take less time. Your new CCH permit will come to the Sheriff’s Office and you will have to pick it up there.
