Gavin Blackwell in the class of 2021 has already opened some eyes of college recruiters.  He is ranked fifth best 2021 wide receiver in 247 Sports top 100.  He is a solid four star player who has potential for a good college career at a Division 1 program.  His chemistry with Sun Valley QB Sam Howell is obvious and it has led to Blackwell putting up big numbers this past season.

The 5’11” 170 pound sophomore athlete is going to grow and mature.  He has accumulated 1089 yards in passing offense to lead all Union County wide receivers.  Also, he has scored 18 touchdowns on 46 receptions while averaging 23.67 yards per catch.  Blackwell runs the 40 in 4.48 and has a vertical leap of 33.

From our sources and knowledge Virginia Tech, North Carolina and East Carolina are very high on Blackwell.  However, Virginia Tech might have the inside track, but it is early in the recruitment process and the young man has two more years at Sun Valley.

Blackwell’s goal was to break 1000 yards receiving this year and he surpassed his target with 1089 yards during the regular season.  Now that the Spartans are in the State Championship Playoffs these outstanding numbers will surely exceed all expectations.

In the upcoming game in the second round of the State Championship Playoffs vs. A.C. Reynolds, the 10-2 Spartans will need to make sure they get Blackwell into this game early, primarily because he could be the difference maker for this team to advance in the tournament.  Their powerful opponent from Asheville, North Carolina is 11-1 on the season.  This game is a rematch of last year’s state semifinal playoff game, won by Reynolds 28-25.
