You’ve been saying you want to get in shape and be healthier all year, and now summer is just around the corner. If you are freaking out because your workout procrastination levels have reached a new height — don’t worry — here are some tips on how to jumpstart your summer routine now.
Enter an Event. This is kind of a throw-yourself-to-the-wolves method, and it can backfire if you don’t plan well. If you sign up for an event like a 5k or 10k, for example, you will have a specific gal with a firm deadline. In addition, you’ll most likely be committed financially, which will serve as further motivation. However, you’ll need to create a healthy, realistic workout plan to be properly prepared for a successful, safe event.
Find a Buddy or Join a Group. If you struggle with holding yourself accountable, a friend or small group can help you stay on track. Find somebody that you can work out with, like a friend or family member. Your local Fitness Together has small group classes that can help. A personal trainer will also hold you accountable and keep you motivated.
Switch Up Your Routine. Maybe you’ve tried working out consistently in the past, but you’ve since lost your motivation. You could have gotten into a workout rut. Try switching up your workout routine and exercises so you won’t get bored and lose your motivation. You will exercise different muscle groups, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it for a longer period.
Reward Yourself. Reward yourself to help keep yourself motivated. Set small fitness goals and once you achieve a goal, give yourself a treat. If you have a big achievement, you deserve a more significant reward, where small incremental achievements can get smaller rewards.
