CHARLOTTE – I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have a connection with your therapist. What is the connection? When I make a connection with another professional, it’s based on mutual respect and trust.
What is mutual respect between you and your massage therapist? Look at their credentials if you’d like. Visit them and see how they conduct their business. Are they professional? I don’t always wear a “uniform” shirt. One of the perks of owning my own practice is I might wear my favorite Tshirt one day, just because I want to. But I’m neat in my appearance. I’m clean and I have good hygiene. My office is tidy, clean, and sanitized and you should feel this when you walk into my space.
What does trust mean between you and your therapist? This one is pretty basic. Are they getting to know you and your health history? Are they working with you to come up with a solution for meeting your massage needs? Do they keep their word? Do you feel comfortable in their presence? This is extremely important when you’re laying on the massage table, as they are in a power position and you’re considered vulnerable.
If you don’t have trust and mutual respect, you may not get the value from your massage time. It’s okay to test people and find someone that fits what you’re looking for. You’re looking for that valuable, professional connection that will give you the results of the massage you’re looking for.
