CHARLOTTE – This has come up lately and I wanted to touch on it. I can remember with my own earlier experiences when I would go to spas, the one thing that drove me crazy was when my massage therapist talked through the entire massage. I am guilty of this as a massage therapist sometimes. I’m trying to take note and get back to how we were trained, which is to limit conversation so the focus is always on you.

Why might people talk during their massage? Reasons such as nervousness or a highly stressed state. Some people don’t have an outlet for stress so talking can be therapeutic. Some people have a lot of energy and are unable to be silent during their massage – that’s okay too. These reasons people prefer to talk during their massage are acceptable. Normally for any of our clients, if you ask us questions or engage us, then we will engage back. No worries, as long as you are comfortable with it.

Some reasons people don’t want to talk during their massage is they feel like if they are speaking then they’re missing out on the full experience of their massage.  My personal  reason, when I get massaged for being quiet is that the time I make for my massage is so precious to me that I don’t want any interruption. That might be your reason as well, and it should be honored. Make sure you communicate with your therapist before the start of your massage.
