To Sleep Or Not To Sleep

CHARLOTTE – Do you talk during your massage? Are you quiet but fully awake? There are talkers and there are sleepers. Either way can be a way to relax.

The sleepers are the ones who come in and fall into a relaxing state as soon as we hit the table. This requires a degree of trust; rest assured that you are safe when you take a quick nap during your massage.

Communicators are the ones who want to talk during their massage. They may live alone or can’t relax while on the table. They may be quiet at home but feel like they can let their thoughts go once they get into the safety of massage.

Which way is correct? In school we are instructed to not carry on conversation with you unless you initiate it and engage us. Perhaps it is a destressing technique when you talk during your massage. You’re getting things out of your head and off your heart. I’ve heard people say they don’t talk during the massage because they want to be alert and attentive to what the massage therapist is doing.

Some people do things different when they come in. Don’t feel like you need to stay awake or fill the air with words. Your silence doesn’t bother us. Listen to your brain. Focus on your breathing or on the way your muscles feel. Feedback is welcome, but not necessary. However you choose to participate in your massage is fine, but make sure you enjoy it.
