CHARLOTTE – As the last article in our National Arthritis Month series, we want to shed some light on one of our favorite services, acupuncture. Acupuncture is a core component of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine. It has been used in treating animals for thousands of years, and we love to use it as a stand alone treatment or combined with more traditional veterinary services.
Acupuncture is performed using small, sterile needles inserted into specific points on the body to stimulate a healing response. Each acupuncture point has a specific action when stimulated. The stimulation of these points result in specific changes in the central nervous system.
Acupuncture can be used in a variety of ways: to stimulate the body’s own pain relieving substances, relax muscles, improve tissue blood flow, oxygenation, and removal of metabolic wastes and toxins. It can also be used for pain management. Specifically, to reduce the amount of oral pain medication given. We commonly use acupuncture to decrease arthritic pain. It helps to lessen nerve sensation in arthritic fur babies which improves overall wellness.
In addition to Dr. Bonilla being able to offer acupuncture services, we are excited to announce that another doctor on our team will soon be able to provide this incredible treatment to fur baby patients! Dr. Brue, who heads our Weddington location, is almost finished with her acupuncture certification through Chi University.
Dr. Brue is excited to expand her skills with her new certification that she is hopeful to complete in the next few months. “Getting certified in acupuncture is allowing me to have another avenue of treatment to offer fur babies. Especially in those situations where pet parents might get frustrated with conventional methods and need additional options to consider. I love growing my knowledge and having another avenue to help patients,” said Dr. Brue.
