CHARLOTTE – Last week in Part 1 of our interview with Traci Messer, Founder of Fit with Fido CLT, she shared some of her and her dog’s favorite ways of getting active together. This week, Traci is continuing to shed light on Canine Fitness Month by discussing how an active lifestyle can benefit pet parents and their fur babies.
Dr. Bonilla: How have your classes helped pet parents and their fur babies get into better shape?
Harris: By incorporating weights and cardio into my classes, humans and dogs get their heart rate up together, which in turn burns calories and increases strength and endurance. I find that being able to bring your dog to a workout makes you more likely to come to class, first because the dogs love it, and second, because having your adorable best friend there with you makes the class go by faster, even when it’s challenging! If you’re just starting out, exercising with your pup is a great way to see how small steps can turn into bigger ones. For example, you may come to class and run just a few laps with your dog, but then that endorphin rush might lead you to want to keep moving together, even when you’re not in class! The rewarding feeling of being able to increase your endurance by running or even walking is always worth it.
Dr. Bonilla: If you could recommend one simple way for pet parents to help with their fur baby’s fitness, what would you suggest?
Harris: Truly, any type of daily activity is better than nothing, even if it’s a quick walk around the block. You won’t regret it, and your dog will be so grateful that you spent time with him or her!
Dr. Bonilla: Is there anything else you’d like to mention?
Harris: I offer my classes every Saturday, aside from the last weekend of the month, when they are offered on Sundays. My classes are for all fitness levels and ages, both for humans and their dogs!
