CHARLOTTE – The doodle’s rise in popularity has a lot to do with the idea of them being low maintenance, adorable, amazing family dogs. However, there is a lot more to doodles than being larger than life teddy bears. With our upcoming event, Oodles of Doodles, we are focused on educating all potential and current dood pet parents. There are 3 essential things we want to ensure people know about the awesome doodle dog!
- They are a combination of 2 different breeds. It is very important that when you are choosing the right doodle mix you consider the personality of the mix of breeds of the doodle. When you cross the sensitive, willing to please Poodle with another working breed like an Australian Shepherd that can result in a high-drive, high-strung, very smart dog who knows exactly what and how to get what he/she wants.
- Most doodles are very high energy. It is essential to look past their looks and see doodles for what they are underneath the fluff. Most doodles are extremely high energy because they are a combination of two working dog breeds. With this comes the responsibility for pet parents to offer quite a bit of exercise and mental stimulation with regular training.
- The “myth” about doodle coats. Because doodles are a mixed breed, there is a lot of variety amongst them, even in the same litter. Due to this, it is impossible to predict exactly how their coat will be from one doodle to another, which means doodle coats may not be as hypoallergenic as believed. In fact, one reason doodles are often rehomed is because pet parents with dog allergies thought they wouldn’t have a reaction to them, only to find that they do.
