Are you a fan of Old Time Radio shows such as Fibber McGee and Molly, My Friend Irma, Our Miss Brooks or Suspense?

I started listening to old recordings of them nearly 15 years ago and have enjoyed them ever since. Many early television shows got their start on the radio; for instance, the I Love Lucy show was modeled after a radio show that Lucille Ball did along with Richard Denning titled my Favorite Husband, and Father Knows Best was a radio show for several years before it moved to TV.

The shows are such fun to listen to from time to time and are usually light, clean and a nice way to drift off to dream land.

The website www.Archive.org has thousands of old time radio shows available that are free to listen to. I want to encourage you to find the website and listen on September 21st to The Complete Broadcast Day. It is a historical treasure! Recorded is an entire broadcasted day of the WJSV radio station out of Washington, DC. From 6:30 am until they signed off at 12:30 you can get a glimpse of what radio and life was like back then. Authur Godfrey is the announcer for part of the broadcast, and they recorded weather, politics, and news. They even recorded game shows and soap operas. It is such fun to listen to the accents of the people, and if you play it on the 21st, you will hear the 78th anniversary of the recording.

My grandmother was ten years old the day it was recorded, and when I asked her, she remembered many of the songs and shows that were aired. There even played a popular song that she sang to me as a little girl, Mammy’s Little Baby Loves Shortnin Bread. Hearing that, along with some songs from the Wizard of Oz (which had just been released the month before) was like stepping back into her childhood.
