CHARLOTTE – There are lots of questions about the Unemployment Benefits for Contractors and Self Employed

So, let’s get to it…

Here are a few Q&A’s:

Q) I am an Independent Contractor. Am I eligible for Unemployment benefits under the CARES Act?

A) You may be eligible for unemployment benefits, depending on your personal circumstances. NC provides Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) to individuals who are self-employed, seeking part-time employment, or wouldn’t qualify for regular unemployment compensation.

Q) I’m partially employed because I’m a student and work part-time doing ride-sharing. Can I certify that I cannot work and get PUA under the CARES Act?

A) You may be eligible for PUA providing you are unemployed, partially unemployed, or unable or unavailable to work for one or more of the qualifying reasons.

Q) One of my workers quit because they would prefer to receive the unemployment compensation benefits under the CARES Act. Are they eligible for unemployment?

A) NO!! There were some who stated they could get more money from unemployment than from their full-time job. They would NOT be eligible for regular unemployment compensation or PUA.

Q) Where do I apply for Unemployment or PUA?

A) nc.gov
