We get many questions this time of year asking what wine(s) should be served with a specific holiday dinner. The answer to that question varies. Â
Traditionally, it depends on the primary dish that you will be serving, and it is recommended that you start with a wine that isn’t too heavy – work up to your powerhouse wines as you work up to the main dish. If you are looking for a good reference, check out VinePair and Wine Folly.
The rich, dark flavors of a Bordeaux will complement a Prime Rib beautifully. For ham try a Zinfandel. The flavors of the grape will balance the sweetness of the meat and sauces/ glazes. Lastly, if you are having turkey your options vary, both red and white. If you prefer non-sweet white wine, chardonnay will pair well. For those of us who like a little more sweetness, a dry Riesling is the perfect complement to turkey. For red drinkers, Pinot Noir or Zinfandel are great options. Â
What about all the wonderful sides that appear on our tables as well? Brussel Sprouts definitely go well with Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Mashed potatoes go well with a Chardonnay or Merlot.
For dessert, Cabernet Sauvignon goes well with chocolate in its various forms – cookies, cake or candy. Mouth-watering cheesecake pairs well with Riesling. And sometimes for dessert we just want wine; then a sweet dessert-style wine or a glass of port is perfect! Â
Most of all, select wines you enjoy and want to share with family and friends. Stop by Vintner’s Hill Wine Bar & Bistro for suggestions and help in selecting your holiday wine.
