Memes are everywhere these days on social media.
What exactly is a meme though?
Here’s the dictionary definition:
meme
/mēm/noun
- an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by non-genetic means, especially imitation.
- a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users.
A meme is more than a popular image with words on it in a particular stylistic way, each meme photo has an original meaning behind it and every true meme will respect that message.
Some good examples are the first world problem memes with a picture of a woman crying. Those memes are meant to poke fun at frustrations many of us have in life that are really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
Some memes come from viral photos of regular people that are particularly expressive or funny, sometimes they come from stock photos that are exceptionally bad or humorous.
There are event entire accounts and pages devoted to memes and the current generation of teens-deemed Generation Z-love memes than almost any other kind of content.
In short, if you want to be cool, brush up on your memes.
