MONROE, NC – On Friday, March 31, 2023, Rocky River Elementary School held their 2023 Career Day Event. Featuring over 40 presenters, Career Day was organized by Ilene Jackowitz, School Registered Nurse, to show help show children some different career options. From Firefighters, Police, and Park Rangers to Physical Therapists, Puzzle Solvers, and DJ, many of the presenters also brought demos of items so the children could get some hands on experience. There was an essay contest for the 5th graders with the topic “What I want to be when I grow up.” Congratulations to essay winners Samuel Eli Cooper from Ms. Yalich’s class and Karoline Wiggins Sandoval from Ms. Hunter’s class! At the end of the career fair a special guest flew in, a Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) helicopter! The pilots then hung out and spoke to all of the children in attendance.
Jackowitz shared, “I would like to thank Principal Cathy Haney and the staff of Rocky River Elementary School along with Union County Public Schools for their incredible support. A special thank you to all of the presenters for taking the time out of their busy day to show our students the many different career opportunities that are available to them.”

Older kids can find the clues and learn about encryption and cyphers while younger kids love opening things.Project2Heal’s representative Gus is surrounded by kids while assistants Stella and Cian explain Project2Heal’s work.Elaine Jones, Dietician at Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute brought a bike-powered smoothie mixer to make healthy smoothies!Ranger Birdie Younginer, with Morrow Mountain, brought a bear skull, antlers, and furs for the kids to learn about being a Park Ranger.Weddington Physical Therapy brought a Neuromuscular Tens machine for the kids to experience. The machine makes the nerves fire so fingers move!GKZ Trucking with Jeffrey and Stacy Bram. Jeffrey mentioned, “It’s nice to be able to share the truck with the kids.
