Delicious offerings inside the pop-up spot

It’s no secret that Waxhaw on the weekends is something special. Locals and travelers alike commute to the historic hotspot for the unique atmosphere of our artsy little town. The classic feel of Waxhaw’s streets, mixed with the ever-growing offerings of upscale and “shabby-chic” modern living creates a hive of millennial-friendly “to-dos”.

This July, the number of stops on a weekender’s list grew by one when SUGAR Donuts opened its pop-up location in the N. Broome St. Stop and Shop.

SUGAR, originally located in ever-popular Ballantyne, is an award winning artisanal donut shop started by two Charlottonians, Kathryn Alexander and Cassmer Ward.

With a heavily successful Ballantyne outlet and popular food tuck under their belts, the pair, at the urging of South Charlotte locals, brought their popular eats to Waxhaw in the form of an outlet inside the convenience store. It’s prime location, and proximity to the weekend Farmer’s Market makes it a great fit for a product that people commonly seek out on leisure days.

SUGAR, since its conception, has been lathered with praise and awards for its delicious donuts. Holding titles like “Best of the Best”, and featured on the cover of Charlotte Magazine, chosen as “Number One Donut” by Charlotte Agenda, and featured in Carolina Bride Magazine, it’s no wonder that Tri-W area residents asked the shop to come to their stomping grounds.

The reputation of the yummy pastries speaks for itself, but it’s no accident that SUGAR earned such a lavish spot on local foodie’s radar. Every handmade donut at SUGAR starts out from scratch ingredients thoughtfully and skillfully assembled by actual pastry chefs. In a market where consumers have become accustomed to mass produced products from chain stores, an encounter with something akin to what your grandmother may have baked up in her warm kitchen makes mouths water in a new way. The burst of bright and fresh flavors, warm dough and refined texture of each bite invites a totally new and unique donut experience- one you’ll be sure to crave again and again, as

The burst of bright and fresh flavors, warm dough and refined texture of each bite invites a totally new and unique donut experience- one you’ll be sure to crave again and again, as many customers become loyal repeat customers after their first visit.

Kathryn Alexander is aware of this genuinely grand eating experience that SUGAR is providing its guests, proudly mentions that “nearly every day a customer will email, post or tell us that our donuts are the best they have had – not just here in Charlotte, but anywhere.”
Now, that’s the type of customer satisfaction that speaks for itself.

“That is really gratifying for all of us at SUGAR and makes getting to work at 4:30 in the morning worthwhile,” Alexander said.

It’s this type of dedication to their craft that makes SUGAR the best-of-best in what they do and now Wahxaw can consider itself among the luckiest-of-the-luckiest to have yet another small-scale venue with heart and soul bringing us award-winning treats in our own backyard.

Got plans this weekend? Now you do!
