MARVIN, NC – Last Saturday, the Marvin Community Development Services Corporation (MCDSC) held their annual Winter Food Giveaway, serving families in the Marvin area with canned goods, cereals, milk certificates and more. Members from the Marvin AME Zion Church donated a multitude of goods to supply the drive, along with donations from Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and others.
The organization funds much of its work in the community through their annual charity golf tournament. That work includes drives like these, community scholarship giveaways, literacy and education programs, health programs, economical development programs, and more.
MCDSC elected president Bob Massey said that he hopes that their future events and partnerships can help the organization to reach even more people, citing a turnout at this event that was lower than expected. The organization hoped to serve an estimated 150 to 175 families through this drive. Food that wasn’t able to be donated to families in the Marvin area, Massey said, was taken to the Community Shelter of Union County and the Winchester Recreation Center to be distributed.
“We have to realize where we can do the most good,” said Massey. “We’re looking at some schools, and some other organizations that we hope to partner with in different areas. We want to try to touch more people.”
Massey said that board members at the MCDSC will soon come together to discuss new opportunities to increase the scope of their charitable work.
“We will have a meeting in two weeks to get some ideas on what we can do to reach more people,” he explained. “We have to adjust to the situation and find the needs of the community. Although we’ve been around for nearly 10 years, we haven’t defined those needs in the way that we can do the most good. We are looking to partner with someone, and we have partnered with Helping Hands and local churches before, but we are looking to partner with someone on a regular basis to help us reach the most people.”
