Organizing Your Priorities

Long lines, traffic, crowded stores, family squabbles – while many think of the holidays as magical, there are a lot of people who dread some of the stress.  With what’s going on in my life, this particular holiday season has really made me stop and think; For one thing the country is as divided as it has ever been in my lifetime and we need peace. I’m getting older and many loved ones will no longer be at my Thanksgiving table. My youngest is in her final year of High School.  As someone who organizes for a living, I thought I would use this week to offer ways to organize your priorities and destress – it will make you feel good.

Make a holiday music list – Put your favorite songs on, music can always calm you down or cheer you up.

Visit a neighbor or call a friend you haven’t connected with in a while –  There’s nothing like catching up with someone or reminding others that they are important to you.

Wake up grateful – When you open your eyes, before you get out of bed, make a list of everything you have to be grateful for.  It will put things into perspective.

Take a walk – not only will it clear your head, it’s good for you.

If your plate is too full, turn down an invite – this might seem counterintuitive, but sometimes not feeling obligated can take some worry off your shoulders.  It’s ok to say, “I can’t make it, I’m sorry.”

Watch a funny movie – Laughter is the best medicine.

Turn off your tech – Putting down your smartphone or closing your laptop is an easy way to get away from it all.

Try to meditate – There are many free YouTube videos that can help.

Give. Give. Give. – There is nothing better than how your feel when you give, whether your time, or a gift.  Doing something for someone else is a great way to feel better.

Voila! You can feel better when the holidays stress you out.
