This year on Saturday, February 22 from 10 am until 5 pm, Project Prom and the Waxhaw Woman’s Club (WWC) are giving away Prom and Formal dresses. These dresses have been collected by Judy Delaney, Member of Waxhaw Woman’s Club and Chairwoman of Project Prom, and the other members of the WWC along with jewelry, shoes, and purses. This is the fifth year that Project Prom has happened and it will be the biggest year yet! With over 600 long dresses and 200 short “dressy” dresses to give away this year in sizes 0 to 28, local girls are invited to come find the perfect dress and accessories and take it home with them.

Delaney explains, “It was started by Nicole Jordan of Sweet Repeats and Waxhaw Ray of Hope five years ago. The event moved to the Waxhaw Woman’s Club four years ago. We don’t limit how many can attend and no verification is needed. The girls can select a dress and one or two accessories like earrings, purses, or shoes. We are finished collecting dresses for this year but are still accepting shoes, purses, and sparkly jewelry until February 21st. Spread the word to anyone who is going to prom or any formal event to come see us!”

One of the highlights of the event for the members of the WWC who participate in the event is getting to act like a fairy godmother! Delaney shares, “We try to give the girls a boutique experience.” The members will help the girls with colors, sizes, accessory matching, and whatever other advice the girls might need. With more colors than imaginable, the rows of donated dresses are separated by sizes, many brand new with tags. Once the girls try on a few dresses and select the perfect one, they then move on to shoes and accessories. After that, they can sit down with Angie Fortney, Qwner of Noma Hair and Skin Salon, and her staff to get some ideas and tips on hair and makeup. This will be Fortney’s fourth year with Project Prom.

Project Prom is open to all local high school-aged girls who need a formal dress. There is no verification of need required, just show up and walk-in! Let the ladies of the Waxhaw Woman’s Club and Project Prom prepare you for your next school dance! Project Prom will be held at the Waxhaw Woman’s Club at 200 E South Main St, Waxhaw, NC 28173.
