Lin Johnson, Owner of Mimi’s Mountain Mixes in Hendersonville, NC, started her business by selling baked goods at her local Farmer’s Market after she found herself divorced and without a job in 2008. It eventually evolved into Johnson just selling the mixes that had made her baked goods famous.
Now, less than 10 years later, her business has taken off with the help of her husband, Gene Carlson, and Lin has established herself by doing what she loves, helping people make delicious baked goods in their own homes and giving back to her community.
Johnson offers Beer Baking Mixes in flavors such as: Bread, Cake, Candy Cookie, Donut, Pancake and Soft Pretzel.
She explains, “They are vegan, non-GMO, and our baking powder is aluminum free. No preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. We even have 2 Gluten Free Mixes. Most of our mixes only require the addition of a 12-ounce can of beer or carbonated beverage. Our motto is ‘Home Cookin’ Made Easy. Just Add Y’er Favorite Brew & Bake’.”
And Provisions Waxhaw makes it easy to get started with your home cooking, with Mimi’s Mountain Mixes for sale in their store. Lisa Vigil, co-owner of Provisions, had approached Johnson right after Vigil acquired the business about selling the mixes in the store and they have been a hit ever since!
It is also important to Johnson to give back to her community.
“Mimi’s business plan is a bit different than many others,” Johnson said. “We reach out to our local women’s shelter for assistance with preparing and packaging our products. This provides these awesome ladies with a new talent that they can add to their resumes and it provides us with a wonderful group of ladies that bless us. In addition, a portion of each sale helps Mimi’s support women & children’s shelters. Our ladies like the idea they provide a quality product for our retailers to sell. When more folks purchase Mimi’s Mountain Mixes, Mimi’s can then support more shelters. It’s a win-win!”
