WAXHAW, NC – When Denise Thompson, owner of Refinished Emporium in Mineral Springs, was seven years old, her older brother used to take her to flea markets to find treasures. Naturally, Denise gravitated toward the furniture, most of it in need of repair, and her brother would let her pick out a piece and take it home to “save” it. This began a life-long passion for refinishing furniture.
Ms. Thompson has evolved as an artist over the years, always keeping an eye on trends and listening closely to her customer’s visions. Furniture has changed over the years as well. Pieces are taller now than they used to be, and it can be hard to tell solid wood from particle board or veneer. Refinished Emporium is full of solid wood and vintage furniture that Denise has refinished, bringing each piece back to its original glory or adding new and exciting twists and contemporary designs.
Denise Thompson is licensed and insured to do custom work. For custom orders, Denise must see the piece in person to inspect it and envision the customer’s request. The make-up of the furniture makes a difference, as different stains and paints react differently to solid wood, veneer, or pressboard. Part of her genius is that she lets the furniture speak for itself. Her meticulous care and attention to detail help make her customer’s visions a reality.
Denise’s love of refinishing furniture extends to the community as well. She enjoys finding old pieces and restoring them to brilliant treasures, which she donates to a local women’s shelter. The articles help these women, who transition from abusive relationships, make their new houses a home.
One of Denise’s favorite projects was for a customer who was distraught over getting rid of a chest of drawers from 1910 that she thought was beyond repair. Ms. Thompson took the piece in, gave it a lot of love and TLC, and returned it to the customer looking like new. The woman was overwhelmed! Denise enjoys bringing old pieces back to life and finding them new homes where they will be appreciated for a lifetime.
