Spring Sports Are On The Way As Winter Season Wraps

WAXHAW, NC – Attention is shifting to the outdoors for Tri-W sports fans as the spring sports season quickly approaches. Winter sports are coming to an end with indoor track and field, wrestling, and swim and dive championships in the books. The basketball state championship tournament brackets have been released, with first round play set to begin on Tuesday. Here is a look at results from the winter season so far and what’s to come for sports in the spring.

Parkwood



As the lone 3A school in the Tri-W area, Parkwood faced some new competitors during their winter season, and have faired well so far. Wolf Pack men’s basketball finished 13-14 on the year, earning a 10-seed position in the postseason tournament. They will play 23-seed St. Stephens on Tuesday for round one of the playoffs. Two Parkwood players, Ashten Hansley and Sam Starnes, were selected for the RRC all-conference team. 

Women’s basketball finished the regular season with a record of 20-6. Shimiya Taylor of the Wolf Pack earned Rocky River Conference player of the year honors following the conference tournament. Taylor, Jade Washington, and Peyton Collins were chosen to receive all-conference honors. The Wolf Pack earned the 7-seed position for the postseason, playing against 26-seed Atkins for round one. The only Tri-W area wrestling state champion, Cody Hardy of the Wolf Pack, earned his second state title, winning over previously undefeated Rory Johnson by a decision of 7-4. 

Parkwood baseball will open their season on February 28 against South Stanly. Lacrosse is set to play the same day against Catawba Ridge. Softball will play on March 9 against Piedmont. Track and field will compete March 9 at the first Marvin Ridge home meet, and March 19 at the Marvin Ridge Invitational. 

Cuthbertson

Both men and women’s track and field won the 4A state championship titles for Cuthbertson this season. Stella Kermes won the individual gold for her 1000 meter run time of 2:54.76. The Cuthbertson 3200 meter relay team set a new state-meet record with their time of 9:24.12. The Cuthbertson men’s team beat out second place Porter Ridge by a single point. Cuthbertson women’s basketball ended their regular season run with a record of 19-7. They will play against the Reagan Raiders for round one of the playoffs. The Cavaliers have earned a 16-seed position. Cavalier men’s basketball ended their season with a record of 10-14.

Cuthbertson baseball will play against Hickory Grove Christian March 1, with softball opening Feb. 28 against Hickory Ridge. Lacrosse will play on March 1 against South Meck and Ardrey Kell. Track and field will compete at the Clash of the Carolinas March 19.

Sun Valley

Spartan men’s basketball ended their regular season with a 24-seed playoff position and a record of 16-10. They will play 9-seed Rocky River for round one of the postseason. Sun Valley guard Tyree White earned all-conference honors. The women’s team at Sun Valley finished 15-11 on the year, earning a 31-seed position in the postseason. They will play 2-seed Northern Guilford in round one. Three Sun Valley players, Aree Meaders, Lindsey Avant, and Tyra Robinson, earned all-conference honors. 

Sun Valley baseball will play East Meck on March 1, followed by Carmel Christian March 4. Softball will play Langtree Charter on March 2. Followed by Charlotte Catholic March 3. Sun Valley lacrosse will play Independence March 1. Track and Field will compete at Marvin Ridge on March 9. They will host two meets later in March.

Weddington

Warrior men’s basketball won the Southern Carolina Conference 4A tournament in an 84-70 game over Porter Ridge. This victory concluded Weddington’s undefeated regular season and guaranteed their 1-seed position in postseason play. They will host 32-seed Olympic for round one of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs. AJ Cook, Chase Lowe, Kyle Frazier, and Evan Morton earned all-conference honors. Women’s basketball finished 7-17 on the year. Brooke Strong was selected for all-conference honors. 

Weddington baseball will play against the Providence Panthers March 1, with softball opening the same day against Hickory Grove Christian. Lacrosse will open against Providence Day and Ardrey Kell. Weddington Track and Field will host two meets to open the season.
