
As fall sports begin to wrap up and game time temperatures plummet, fans are glad to turn indoors for the winter sports season. Some of the most exciting moments in high school sports happen during the winter season as basketball, wrestling, swimming and indoor track get underway. Here is a look at the upcoming winter sports season.
Weddington
The swim team at Weddington has high expectations to live up to for this year after a strong 2018 performance. The Warriors placed in nearly every championship event, winning gold in several, and they are returning conference champions. They will swim in a meet at Charlotte Catholic on December 13. The basketball teams will play their first games Tuesday, November 19 at Porter Ridge. The men’s basketball team earned a record of 16-12 last year. They were eliminated in the second round of the state playoffs by Mount Tabor. The women’s team ended their season last year with an overall record of 17-10. They were 9-5 in conference play.
Cuthbertson
The men’s basketball team at Cuthbertson is coming off of a 10-15 overall record last year. They will open their season against Charlotte Latin at home on Thursday, November 21. The Cavaliers also earned several top five finishes in last year’s swim championships, most notably in the women’s division. The first team meet for Cuthbertson wrestling is currently scheduled for early January, but earlier dates are expected to be added, and individual wrestlers will be participating in tournaments as early as Thanksgiving weekend.
Parkwood
Parkwood men’s basketball will be looking for a fresh start this year as they take on Union Academy on November 19 to open the season. The Rebels were unable to secure a conference win last year, ending their season with an overall record of 5-19. Parkwood has yet to schedule wrestling dates prior to January, but are expected to be participating in tournament wrestling on Thanksgiving weekend. The women’s basketball team will play against Union Academy as well on November 19. Their record last year was 4-20.
Sun Valley
The men’s basketball team at Sun Valley ended their season at 15-10 last year, with a conference record of 10-4. They will open their season at home against Cox Mill on November 19. The Women’s team will open against Cox Mill as well. Their record for last year was 3-21. The Spartans are expected to compete in tournament wrestling near the end of November.
Marvin Ridge
The Mavericks are coming off of a 16-12 season in men’s basketball. The Mavericks made it to the second round of the state playoffs last year where they were defeated by Kings Mountain 78-63. They will play the South Meck Sabres on November 18 to start their season. The Women’s team at Marvin Ridge was 12-12 last year.
