This Week’s Tri-W Sports Highlights

With fall sports coming to a close, football teams in the Tri-W area are scrambling for playoff spots. As football and soccer teams move along through the end of their regular seasons, volleyball and cross country turn to tournament play. Here is a look at the winning performances from Tri-W teams this week.

Cuthbertson



The Cavaliers had a big week at the 3A cross country regionals. The women’s cross country team earned first place overall to become the 3A regional champions, with Gabriella Castro finishing first and teammate Madeline Hill finishing second. The men’s cross country team earned second place overall at the regional championship race, led by Mickey Schihl and Davis Seik with top ten finishes.

Parkwood

Teams at Parkwood earned two important conference wins this week. The Rebels travelled to Piedmont for a conference football matchup, and earned a confidence boosting 55-7 win over the Panthers. Parkwood will play at home this Friday against the Monroe Redhawks for their final regular season game of the year. The varsity soccer team at Parkwood earned a close 7-5 victory over Monroe in their last regular season game. The Rebels will play at A.C. Reynolds on November 6 to begin playoff competition.

Sun Valley

The varsity soccer Spartans earned a shutout victory 5-0 at home against Piedmont this week. This week’s win moves the Spartans to 5-17 on the year, and puts an end to a 10 game losing streak. The Sun Valley varsity volleyball team swept Kings Mountain in the first round of the state playoffs, winning all three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-8 and 25-21. The Spartans were defeated in tournament play by Marvin Ridge on Tuesday.

Marvin Ridge

The Mavericks earned a big win for their football program against Sun Valley on Friday. In their 42-12 victory over the Spartans, the Mavericks have all but guaranteed their spot in the 3A state playoffs in the coming weeks. Marvin Ridge will play Charlotte Catholic for their final regular season game of the year. The volleyball Mavericks earned 3-0 wins against East Rowan, Sun Valley and Southwestern Randolph in NCHSAA tournament play before falling to West Henderson 3-2.

Weddington

The Warriors have maintained their perfect football record with a 45-13 win against Monroe on Friday. Weddington will finish their regular season at home against Cuthbertson on November 8. The men’s cross country team at Weddington won first place at the 3A Midwest Regional Championship race, with Jake Toomey finishing first overall. The women’s cross country team earned a close second place regional finish.
