This Week’s Tri-W Sports Highlights

Winter break hasn’t stopped Tri-W area schools from playing some of their best games of the season. Participating in tournaments across the state, Tri-W teams have earned some exciting wins, and have endured some difficult losses. Here is a look at what Tri-W schools have been up to over winter break.

Parkwood



The men’s and women’s basketball teams finished second in the first annual Rebel Holiday Classic. The men’s team fell 78-66 to Indian Land in the final game of the tournament. The women’s team fell 45-38 to Marvin Ridge. Several Parkwood wrestlers placed at the Holy Angels Invitational Tournament, including Savannah Bramhall, who earned a first place finish.

Cuthbertson

The men’s basketball team at Cuthbertson won two games at the East Lincoln Winter Jam this week. The Cavaliers won 65-58 over Northwest Cabarrus, and won 72-22 over Garinger. The wrestling team at Cuthbertson earned first place overall at the Pirate Invitational Tournament. 

Weddington

Both varsity basketball teams at Weddington earned big wins this week. The men’s team won 57-47 over Charlotte Catholic, and followed up with a win over Ashbrook 78-37. The women’s team is 10-2 after wins over O’Neal and West Meck by scores of 45-39 and 67-39. The Weddington wrestling team placed fifth at the Porter Ridge Invitational Tournament.

Sun Valley

Sun Valley’s men’s basketball team earned a first place finish at the Laurie Ann Cruse Christmas Classic. The women’s team earned a second place finish. The men’s team defeated South Stanly, and Mt. Pleasant to advance to the championship, where they defeated Central Cabarrus 60-43. The women’s team fell 50-29 against Cox Mill, after defeating Mt. Pleasant and South Stanly.

Marvin Ridge

The women’s basketball team won first place this week at the first annual Rebel Holiday Classic, defeating Parkwood in the championship round by a score of 45-38. Men’s basketball at Marvin Ridge won 47-44 over St. James, and won 55-50 over South Point, before falling 59-55 to Dawson County in the championship game of the Bluffton Bobcat Classic.
