
WAXHAW, NC – Tri-W schools are off to a strong start in lacrosse and soccer, with many teams opening their seasons with big wins. Basketball continues to roll on, and the All-SCC volleyball team has been announced, with 11 out of 14 positions featuring players from Tri-W schools. Read on for the highlights so far, from our local teams.

Marvin Ridge
Varsity boys soccer at Marvin Ridge is currently undefeated, following two conference wins against Monroe and Piedmont to start the season. The matchup against the Redhawks was highly contested, ending in a 4-2 overtime win for the Mavericks. The win came by way of senior Alexi Grafakos’ hat trick, and senior Anthonty Garuba’s early-game goal. The follow-up win against Piedmont was a 5-0 shutout at home.

The Mavericks began their boys lacrosse season with a massive 20-2 victory over the Ronald Reagan Raiders out of Pfafftown – yes, that’s a real place – North Carolina. Marvin Ridge will face 1-0 Cuthbertson at home Feb. 8.
Three Marvin Ridge volleyball players earned All-SCC honors, including Reagan Baylog, Mac Russ, and SCC player of the year Katie Jamerson. Brook Hammers of Marvin Ridge earned co-coach of the year honors.
Parkwood
Wolf Pack girls basketball is 4-4 on the year after a win at home against Monroe and a loss to Weddington later in the week. Tuesday’s win against Monroe ended at 64-42, on the heels of a second-quarter takeover that the Redhawks couldn’t overcome. Parkwood’s scoring effort was led by sophomore Jade Washington and senior Morgan Edwards, who scored 16 and 15 points respectively.Â
Sun Valley
The Spartans have started off their boys lacrosse season with a 12-5 win over rival school Porter Ridge. The teams will have a rematch on Feb. 4.
Sun Valley earned their first win of the boys soccer season with a 9-0 shutout over the Parkwood Wolf Pack. Three Spartan goals came by way of freshman Vincent Gallardo, with two goals by junior Kevin Perez. Senior Daniel Burnett earned the win in the goal with four saves. Sun Valley placed three athletes on the All-SCC volleyball team, including Taylor Parker, Hailey Pearce, and Aaliyah Mitchell
Cuthbertson
Girls basketball is 7-1 at Cuthbertson after a decisive victory over Sun Valley by a score of 77-29. Senior Kamaria Sheriff and junior Ruby Williams led the Cavaliers’ scoring efforts with 15 points each. Senior Maddie Dillinger followed with 14 points of her own. Dillinger, Sheriff, and Williams earned a combined 10 steals and 6 blocks on the night.
Boys lacrosse earned a 13-6 win against Christ the King out of Huntersville. They are 1-0 on the year. The Cavaliers placed two athletes on the All-SCC volleyball team, including Nadya Graham and Ashlyn Mathews.
Weddington
The Warriors have left their boys soccer opponents scoreless in their first two contests of the year. Weddington opened their season with a 10-0 win over the Parkwood Wolf Pack, and followed with a 7-0 victory over Monroe. The Warriors earned all 10 of their goals in the first half of play against Parkwood. They split their goals between halves in the matchup against the Redhawks, scoring three in the first and four in the second.Â
Boys lacrosse is undefeated as well, securing a 9-6 win over Lake Norman. The Warriors placed three athletes on the All-SCC volleyball team, including Lyvia Trimp, Mailey Garner, and Chloe Bays.
