
WAXHAW, NC – Basketball season has ended with a Tri-W state champion, while conference play moves forward across the board. Here is a look at the week in Tri-W sports.
The Weddington Warriors have earned their first ever men’s state championship, with an exciting win over the Northwood Chargers. Saturday’s championship win completed a perfect 18-0 season for the Warriors. Weddington was led to their 56-47 victory by the efforts of several double digit scoring performances.
Leading the Warriors in scoring was junior guard Chase Lowe, earning 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Lowe was named the Charlie Adams 3A Most Valuable Player. Junior shooting guard A.J. Cook earned the title of Most Outstanding Player for Weddington, earning 10 points and putting forward a strong defensive effort. Two Weddington seniors, Caleb Wetherbee and Brock Bowen, led the Warriors in field goal percentage, both shooting 67% from the field. Both seniors shot 100% from the free-throw line in Saturday’s championship game, with Bowen adding five assists and four steals, while Wetherbee earned 6 rebounds. Junior forward Kyle Frazier added 12 points on the night for the Warriors.

Conference soccer continues to unfold as teams near the end of regular season play. With playoffs less than two weeks away, Marvin Ridge gave conference leader Weddington their first loss of the year. The Marvin Ridge victory came by way of two goals from senior Anthony Garuba, one off of an assist from sophomore goalie Jarret Wuerslin. The Mavericks are 8-1-2 on the year. They will face Charlotte Catholic on Thursday for their last game of the regular season.
Weddington and Cuthbertson remain undefeated in football with important conference wins on Friday night. The Warriors won over the Charlotte Catholic Cougars in a narrow 7-3 contest, while the Cavaliers earned a 31-10 victory over the Piedmont Panthers. Parkwood earned their first win of the season with a 36-19 win over Sun Valley.
