WEDDINGTON, NC – The Town will be demolishing the Matthews House at 6924 Matthews-Weddington Road. This property sits adjacent to the current town hall and directly behind the Weddington Corners Shopping Center. The property was purchased from long-standing Weddington residents Ella Virginia Matthews and Kenneth Jeffrey Matthews and had been in the JT Matthews family since February 9, 1932. The Town originally purchased the property to provide our community with so many wonderful potential growth opportunities, including the expansion of the town hall facilities, green space, a town park, or expanded area to support town events and other outdoor activities for our residents. In August 2018, the Council looked into renovating the house but determined that the cost of saving it would exceed the resulting renovation. After much deliberation, they decided it would not be a good use of the property as occupancy and uses would be limited. As a result, the Matthews House will be demolished to pave a way for more public green space.
