WAXHAW, NC – After a summer full of training camps and workouts, fall sports are finally underway. With their first official practices behind them, Tri-W-area teams are looking forward to their first contests of the new season beginning August 16. Conference changes in effect until 2025 will make for a much different season at Tri-W schools. Here is a look at the new conferences, and the matchups that you can expect.
Four Tri-W teams will participate this year in a newly established 4A conference, while one will compete in a new 2A/3A hybrid conference. The Parkwood Wolf Pack will be facing a much different lineup for conference competition this year as the lone 2A/3A contender from the Tri-W area. Although the opponents are familiar to the Wolf Pack in non-conference play, the contests will be much different between Parkwood and the other members of the new Rocky River 2A/3A conference. This new conference will feature schools that are a bit farther from home than Parkwood is used to. Conference matchups for the Wolf Pack will include trips to Anson, Forest Hills, and West Stanly alongside local schools CATA and Monroe. Four schools from the Tri-W area – Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, Sun Valley, and Weddington – will continue their longstanding conference play against one another, with the addition of Porter Ridge and Piedmont. These six teams will make up the new Southern Carolina 4A Conference.
First contests for football are just over a week away. Tri-W teams will step onto the gridiron August 20 for some interesting season openers. Weddington’s first varsity football game of the year will be at home against Charlotte Christian, followed the next week by a matchup against Providence Day. Parkwood will take to the football field at Cuthbertson for the season opener, followed by a trip northeast of Charlotte to take on the Concord Spiders. Cuthbertson will follow up their opening-week game against Parkwood with a home game against the Robinson Bulldogs. Marvin Ridge will open the season against Monroe, following up at Independence the next week. The Sun Valley Spartans will face the Olympic Trojans for week one and A. L. Brown for week two.
Men’s soccer is set to kick off just a few days prior to football, with the earliest games played on August 16. Weddington will begin the season against Corvian Community. Parkwood will open against Piedmont. Cuthbertson will play against the East Meck Eagles for week one, meeting Parkwood in their second game. Sun Valley will open up against Independence and Butler the week of August 16. Marvin Ridge will travel to Covenant Day for their first game of the year.
Changing pace from the heat of the outdoors, varsity volleyball begins August 16 as well. Weddington’s first match is an away non-conference contest against Mallard Creek, with a match against Ardrey Kell August 19. Parkwood will host Piedmont August 16. The Wolf Pack will make a trip to Union Academy later in the week. Sun Valley will play at Providence for their first match, with no further contests prior to facing Weddington on September 9. Cuthbertson will open against Providence as well, one week earlier on August 17. Marvin Ridge will travel to Arborbrook Christian Academy August 24. They will host Charlotte Catholic on August 26.
