Tri-W Sports Highlights: Conference Football is on the Horizon

WAXHAW, NC – Tri-W teams are looking confident after earning big wins leading up to conference football beginning this week. In this week’s sports highlights we’ll take a look at football results, some team leaders, and schedules for the first week of conference play.

Parkwood is on a two-win streak following a massive 50-21 homecoming win over Buford, bringing their record to 2-1. The Wolf Pack will play at home for their first conference game this week against Forest Hills. Leading the pack, with more than half of the team’s rushing yards, is junior Wisdom Holmes. He has carried for 368 yards so far on the season, averaging 9.9 yards per carry. Holmes has earned 5 of the teams 6 rushing touchdowns this year, averaging 122.7 yards per game. Junior  Isaiah Mobley leads in receiving yards, bringing in 13 receptions for 202 yards.

Weddington is near the top of the Southern Carolina 4A conference, and they lead all other Tri-W schools, behind only the undefeated Porter Ridge Pirates. The Warriors have not reported stats for this season. A 28-0 blowout against the Olympic Trojans leads Weddington into the first week of conference play, where they will face off against the 2-3 Piedmont Panthers. Weddington is currently ranked at number 15 in the state. The Panthers hold a rank of 201. The Warriors are 4-1 on the season. 

Cuthbertson’s three-game losing streak came to an end this week with a 27-6 win over the previously undefeated Jay M. Robinson Bulldogs. Their first conference game of the season will be against fellow Tri-W school Sun Valley. The Cavaliers have shared the passing responsibilities this year between sophomore Parker Burke and senior AJ Colombo. The team has passed for 801 total yards. 406 of those yards belong to Burke, with 395 yards coming from Colombo. 274 rushing yards belong to the senior as well. Cuthbertson will begin conference play this week with a record of 3-2

Sun Valley earned their first win of the year this week in a 30-0 victory over the Central High Eagles. They will face off in Waxhaw against Cuthbertson for the first week of conference play. Sophomore Brady Turriff leads the Spartan offense in passing yards, earning 263 on the season. Turriff has completed 25 passes on 51 attempts. Senior Eric Boyd leads the defense with 25 solo tackles and 36 total. The Spartans hold a record of 1-4 on the year.

Marvin Ridge rested on a bye this week preparing for a matchup against the undefeated Porter Ridge Pirates in their first conference game. Sophomore Evan Medders has racked up an incredible 601 passing yards on the year and another 220 on the ground. Junior Caleb Kelson has rushed for 263 averaging 9.7 yards per carry. The Maverick defensive pressure has been helmed this year by a sophomore as well. Finlay Mitchell has earned 25 solo tackles and caused two fumbles so far on the season. The Mavericks hold a record of 3-1 heading into Friday’s home game against the Pirates.
