Two Tri-W teams are left in the running for a shot at the NCHSAA football championship in December, and only one will remain after this week. The Weddington Warriors and Cuthbertson Cavaliers are set to face off this Friday for the fourth round of the championship tournament, so let’s take a look at the results of round three and what to expect coming up.

Weddington dragged down by a host of Cuthbertson defenders

Marvin Ridge and Parkwood found themselves eliminated from playoff competition this week in close losses. Parkwood lost at home 20-17 to the 25-seed Forestview Jaguars. The Jaguars put up 252 yards against the Wolf Pack, nearly splitting the difference between rushing and receiving. Parkwood ended their season with a record of 6-3.

The Mavericks took a loss from 3-seed Weddington on Friday by a score of 41-31, ending their season with a record of 8-3. The Mavericks put up 335 points on the season, allowing for 180 from opponents. Weddington has earned 365 points so far, allowing for 134. The Warriors will play 27-seed Cuthbertson at home for round four. The winner of Friday’s game will be facing the winner of a round four game between the Porter Ridge Pirates and the Chambers Cougars.

Weddington shakes a defender

Cuthbertson has advanced to round four of the playoffs with a 31-14 win over the 22-seed Lake Norman Wildcats. Sophomore quarterback Parker Burke led the Cuthbertson offense in Friday night’s win with 265 yards, as the Wildcats put an effective stop to the Cuthbertson running game outside of the red zone. Senior AJ Colombo led the receiving effort with three receptions for 82 yards. Senior Matthew Grant caught one pass for 59 yards and a touchdown. Burke, Colombo, and senior Carson Hegele each earned a rushing touchdown on the night. The Cuthbertson defense was led by junior Killian Fahy and senior Anthony Goodloe, each earning 8 tackles on the night. Junior Cason Johnson earned one interception on Friday. Seniors Isaac Rieken and Chibuzo Iheme recovered one fumble each.
