WAXHAW, NC – Weddington is the lone Tri-W Team left in the running for a football championship, as a new sports season begins to unfold. The Warriors will appear in round four of the NCHSAA 4A state tournament this Friday, as they host the Chambers Cougars in an attempt to move one step closer to a shot at the state championship title. Here we will take a look at what’s in store for the Warriors as they move on to round four, and what to expect from the early weeks of winter sports competition.

The Cuthbertson Cavaliers have been eliminated from playoff competition following a 34-21 loss to the Weddington Warriors. Friday’s game turned in Weddington’s favor early on, following a first-quarter interception by junior Zymill Patterson. The Warriors capitalized on this opportunity, scoring first on the night with a field goal less than four minutes into the game.

Weddington widened the gap to end the first quarter 10-0 following a touchdown from senior running back Kyle Parsons. The Cavaliers looked to close the score gap early in the second quarter, with a fourth down score from senior wide receiver Carson Hegele, but the 10-7 game took a different turn by the end of the first half. Parsons and the Warriors earned another touchdown, and a field goal, to end the second quarter 19-7.

Another Matthew Moonan field goal put the Warriors ahead 22-7, while Cuthbertson worked on a comeback plan. The third quarter ended with a touchdown pass from Cuthbertson sophomore quarterback Parker Burke to junior receiver Reece Morgan, making the score 22-14, but the comeback effort wouldn’t be enough as Weddington fired up for a high-scoring fourth quarter.

With just over 10 minutes left to play the Warriors scored again, making for a two possession game. With the score at 28-14, Weddington’s Zymill Patterson picked up a second interception on the night, deflating the efforts of a Cuthbertson comeback. In the last two minutes of play, both teams scored again, leaving the final count at 34-21.
