Tri-W Sports Highlights: Wins Across the Board for Women’s Basketball

WAXHAW, NC – Win streaks abound for Tri-W women’s basketball teams as conference tournaments approach, and the season enters it’s last few weeks. The Marvin Ridge Mavericks are at first place in the Southern Carolina 4A Conference with an overall record of 13-4, and an undefeated conference record of 4-0. Sun Valley and Cuthbertson follow close behind, each with a conference record of 3-1. Weddington is 1-3 in conference play, and 4-12 on the year. The Parkwood women’s team holds second place in the Rocky River 3A Conference, with an overall record of 13-5, and a conference record of 3-1. Let’s take a look at what’s to come for your Tri-W Women’s basketball teams, and some stats from their recent games.

Behind Forest Hills by only one conference win, the Parkwood women’s team hopes to move into first place in their conference this week as they take on the Yellow Jackets and the West Stanly Colts. Their most recent win, the third in a row, came by way of a 71-36 win over the Anson Bearcats. Parkwood shooting guard Peyton Collins led the Wolf Pack with 17 points on the night, shooting 50% from the floor. Senior guard Shimiya Taylor led defensively, and on the boards with 10 rebounds, five steals, two blocks, and five assists.

At the top of the 4A standings, Marvin Ridge hopes to keep second and third place Cuthbertson and Sun Valley at bay, as they take on the two teams this week. The Mavericks bested the two teams early in January by fairly significant margins. Marvin’s last matchup against the Cavaliers ended in a score of 51-28. The Mavericks came out on top over the Spartans, in their last matchup, by a score of 49-32. Marvin Ridge will take on Cuthbertson on Tuesday of this week, and Sun Valley on Friday.

Cuthbertson will take on the Mavericks this week on the tail of a four game win streak. Their most recent win came by way of a 63-47 win over the Piedmont Panthers. Cuthbertson forward Ruby Williams led the way for the Cavaliers with 33 points in Thursday’s game. Williams accumulated three rebounds, one block, and two steals as well. Junior center Amanda Sacoto led on the boards with 11 rebounds, racking up eight assists and two blocks as well. The Cavaliers will take on Marvin Ridge and Porter Ridge this week in conference matchups this week.

Sun Valley’s most recent win was a nail biter against Porter Ridge. The Spartans overcame the Pirates 48-43 in Thursday’s game. Leading the team offensively was Lindsey Avant, accumulating 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sophomore Aree Meaders led the defense with six steals and six defensive rebounds, totalling eight rebounds on the night. 

Weddington has ended their four-game losing streak with a 38-30 win over the Porter Ridge Pirates. Weddington senior guard Brooke Strong took the lead in Wednesday’s game, scoring 16 points, earning 11 rebounds, and three steals. Weddington will pick up conference play this week against Sun Valley on Tuesday, and Piedmont on Friday.
