Union County Breaks Ground on Southwest Regional Library

WAXHAW, NC – Union County is celebrating the groundbreaking of the SouthwestRegional Library. The Southwest Regional Library will be built on Cuthbertson Road in Waxhaw, next to Cuthbertson Middle School. With approximately 19,000 square feet, the library will offer expanded collections, programs, and meeting spaces. There are an estimated 70,000 residents within 15 minutes of the library.

“We are so thrilled to be one step closer to opening a new library in the fastest-growing area of UnionCounty,” said Nina Chaffin, Director of the Union County Library. “Libraries are uniquely positioned to foster community connections, and we look forward to creating and expanding partnerships in our new location. With this new facility, we will also be able to offer our full array of services and programs to western Union County.”The Southwest Regional Library will include a children’s storytime area, reading nooks, a STEAM lab, study rooms, an outdoor patio, technology spaces, and more.



In 2016, voters approved a $10 million bond for the construction of the new library. The Union County LibraryFoundation, the non-profit fundraising support group for Union County Libraries, has a goal to raise an additional $1.5 million for books, amenities, technology, and programming spaces.”Passionate about the power of libraries, passionate about investment in creating community through libraries, and passionate about investing in Union County’s future, the Union County LibraryFoundation is honored to partner with Union County and Union County Libraries,” said Angela Bennett, Chair of the Union County Library Foundation. “Overseeing Our Library, Our Future capital campaign, the Foundation strives to create indoor and outdoor spaces for the new library that is as inspiring as the learning taking place inside them. The Foundation believes that an investment in SouthwestRegional Library is an investment in the future of Union County.”
