WAXHAW, NC – On Friday, November 11, Waxhaw celebrated Veterans Day. The holiday was originally formed as Armistice Day to celebrate the end of World War I on the 11th day of the 11th month. Many celebrations are conducted around 11:11 am as a further remembrance of the date.  A 24-hour guard stood at the Waxhaw Military Wall of Honor consisting of Kenneth Posko USN, Chris Cangemi USAF, and Justice Heitz US Army 82 Airborn.

Usually held at the Military Wall of Honor in downtown Waxhaw, this year’s event was moved indoors to Kensington Elementary due to inclement weather. The ceremony was well attended by veterans, neighbors, the Waxhaw Fire Department and the Waxhaw Police Department, and families. The Parkwood JROTC was on hand as the color guard while Waxhaw Pack 53 led the Pledge of Allegiance. Cristina Long sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem followed by a bag pipe arrangement of the military songs by Jimmy Brennan. This years guest speaker was Don Blankenberg while Anthony Parker was the MC. Finally, Edna Drakeford with Waxhaw’s Quilts of Valor (QoV) presented quilts to several veterans marking the fifth year of quilts gifted by the Waxhaw QoV volunteers.
