And they’ve been doing it for the last 40 years
Waxhaw Animal Hospital has built its reputation on customized and compassionate care for our local community’s pets. They operate on a system of treating the whole pet – inclusive of its owners – to build lasting and trusting relationships among them both.
Established in 1978, Waxhaw Animal Hospital has grown substantially over the years, in effort to keep up with the growing demand of the area. The hospital is owned by Dr.Tanya Burtis who is also an associate there, along with her husband, Jason Burtis who serves as the Director of Admin Services. In an effort to provide a more or less, one-stop-shop for their clients, Dr.Burtis specializes in small animals, as well as orthopedics and ultrasounds. Their other full-time associate, Dr.Sonia Borrell, specializes in exotics, from birds to small reptiles to pocket pets (e.g., ferrets, sugar gliders, rabbits, chickens, etc.). Having expanded the practice 18 years ago to accommodate more exam rooms and bigger boarding facilities, the practice also offers laser therapy and/or acupuncture services to treat sore joints, alleviate pain and generally, speed the healing process for acute and long term issues.
“We provide a little town feel in an advanced facility,” says Jason. “Our goal has been to continually offer the best care with the best equipment so that our clients don’t have to run all over the place looking for specialists.”
Aside from general and niche veterinary services, Waxhaw Animal Hospital offers clients kennel boarding, where they are able to accommodate over 80 dogs and 20 cats. And for many of their clients, the convenience of being able to board their furry loved one at the same place that is intimately familiar with their medical care cannot be beat. Clients can also opt for grooming services, which is done out of the Raining Cats and Dogs Pet Boutique, housed across the street.
Over the years, Waxhaw Animal Hospital has built lasting relationships by providing top-notch care to its clients, but also by hosting quarterly events to engage the community; and youth programs aimed at instilling a passion for pets and the veterinary vocation as a whole. Their next event, Summer Kick-Off, will be held on June 2nd from 5-7pm, and will organize a social gathering with activities, food trucks, a beer garden, and fundraising to a TBD local charity.
As for their youth programs, their coveted summer veterinary camp will return for its eighth, straight year. The hospital holds eight, week-long sessions throughout the summer, and are geared towards elementary and middle school-aged children. The camp aims to expose kids to the practice of veterinary medicine, responsible pet ownership, and occupational offerings in the field. For the seasoned campers, they are even able to observe routine surgeries, such as a spay or neuter. For more information or to register for their summer camp, please visit www.ncvetcamp.com.
Waxhaw Animal Hospital has built the last 40 years striving to meet its motto, “helping your pets enjoy of lifetime of good health.” In tandem, it has found its indelible place in our community as a trusted advisor for the furry friends we love so deeply.
