WAXHAW, NC – American flags line the streets of downtown Waxhaw on many holidays, inspiring patriotism and reminding all those who pass by of why those days are celebrated. These displays make Waxhaw a joy to visit during these holidays, providing a concrete visual representation of holidays that might otherwise remain as abstractions to casual observers.

The group in charge of these displays is the Waxhaw-Weddington Rotary Club, and they have partnered with Waxhaw Farmers Market in their current Flags for Heroes campaign. The Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department joined in with trucks and crew at the last fundraising event. Funds from flags sold at Saturday’s market went to support the first responders of the 9/11 attacks.

While proceeds from that event went to a specific cause, a flag can be sponsored in honor of any of our nation’s heroes, with proceeds helping to fund the many local service projects of Waxhaw Weddington Rotary, including the Queen City Honor Flight, Union County Community Shelter, Common Heart, and many others. All sponsored heroes will have a personalized medallion attached to one of Waxhaw’s flags in their honor.

Flags will be flown on September 11 and on Veterans Day, after which heroes will be given their medallions to keep. Flag sponsorship forms can be found at the Waxhaw-Weddington Rotary Club page at https://www.facebook.com/flagsforheroeswaxhaw.  Sponsorship remains available until September 11.
