The Union County Public Library has selected a site for the new library in Waxhaw. Located on Cuthbertson Rd. next to the Cuthbertson Middle School, the new site is currently owned by the school board. This location was selected out of the many considered based on location, accessibility, and other factors. Currently, the board is waiting for the paperwork from the legal team to get the land transferred. After that is completed, they will be able to start looking at plans and construction.
One of the biggest issues with the current library in Waxhaw is the size. Elaina Wolfe, Branch Manager of the Waxhaw Branch Library, explains, “The Waxhaw Branch is very limited in what it can offer our communities because of our small space. We have had to move our weekly Children’s Storytimes and Kids’ Summer Reading events off-site to the American Legion Post 208 so as not to exceed fire code capacity at the library. I am most excited about the new library providing the space for these events and having more staff to provide even more events like them.”
Nina Chaffin, Union County Library Director, is also very excited about the new location. In addition to the off-site events, the new location will also be able to have separate children’s, teens, and adult sections. And with the larger space, they will also be able to expand the collections housed in the library instead of having to transfer from other larger facilities. Wolfe adds, “The new library will provide our growing communities with more space for library materials and access to technology as well as meeting rooms and study rooms. A larger and more accessible parking lot will also be a wonderful improvement.”
