WAXHAW, NC – Lawrence Shaffer‘s experience working in a large global corporation and smaller industrial businesses proved beneficial when he bought Waxhaw’s Ace Hardware store (3927 Providence Road S) in April 2020. Having lived in Marvin, NC, since 2010, Lawrence is familiar with the landscape and needs of the nearby community. Always a “do-it-yourself” type of guy, Lawrence is married to an avid gardener. The couple enjoys working with their hands, and they both appreciate the agricultural needs of rural areas near and around Waxhaw.

One of the greatest hurdles of taking over the store was remodeling the entire interior, which only took a span of three months to complete. As a result of the renovations, the aisles are wider, there are more open spaces, and the products are properly arranged in a more customer-friendly manner. One of the departments the store has brought up to par with competitors is the paint department, including great new paint lines like Benjamin Moore and Magnolia. All merchandise has been updated, not to mention the EGO and Toro outdoor power equipment, Milwaukee and Dewalt power tools, automotive key programming, Delta and Moen plumbing fixtures, and gardening products. They continue to operate a small engine repair shop where they service all makes and models of outdoor power equipment.
Recently, an animal health department was added to the store, including products for local horse owners such as supplements, dewormers, topicals, and grooming supplies. Their existing animal feed is quite extensive, including but not limited to nutritional products for goats and chickens. Animal bedding products are also available. Not every Ace Hardware store carries these supplies, and this addition is perfect for the Waxhaw area and neighboring farms. In the near future, they plan to include more up-to-date products and make supplementary improvements to the front of the store.
As COVID becomes more controlled, Ace Hardware plans on hosting grill demos of brands such as Weber, Big Green Egg, and Traeger. Above all, Lawrence ensures both newcomers and loyal buyers that they will continue helping customers locate what they need. All employees of the former owner have remained with the store and are very knowledgeable of the right supply for the right situation. New employees have also been added to the team. It is their goal to be known as Waxhaw’s local hardware store, as it is clear that the entire store’s team works together. Because they care for the community. Because they appreciate the needs of the experienced who are looking for a new tool and are glad to direct those learning something for the first time. Everyone is welcome at Waxhaw’s updated Ace Hardware. They are open 8:00 am – 6:00 pm Mondays through Saturdays and 11:00 am – 500 pm on Sundays.
