The Weddington Warriors defeated Charlotte Catholic 45-0 on Friday, for the Cougars’ first conference loss in 10 years. The Weddington victory ended a streak of more than 60 conference wins for Catholic, and added to Weddington’s own impressive run of victories. The Warriors are undefeated since September of last year.

Turnovers told the story of the first quarter for both sides, until Weddington junior Will Shipley broke the ice, running in the first touchdown of the night with just seven seconds left in the first. A field goal by Weddington senior Ian Williams capped off the only scoring drive of the second quarter. Both teams were forced to punt on their following attempts, leaving the score 10-0 at the half.

The Warriors kicked a touchback to open the second half, and received a punt on their own 50 yard line after a sack by Weddington senior Trey Alsbrooks forced a Cougar three and out. The Warriors moved down to the 15 yard line, essentially untouched. A direct snap to Will Shipley led to his second touchdown of the night, putting the Warriors ahead 17-0. The Warriors went on to score on the heels of a fumble and an interception to end the third quarter ahead 31-0.

The trend of turnovers and scores continued into the fourth quarter, putting the Warriors far out of reach of any Cougar attempt at a comeback. A touchdown by Weddington sophomore Kyle Parsons made the final score 45-0.
