CHARLOTTE – Beyond its value as an attractive landscape addition, mulch plays an important role in maintaining a healthy and vibrant planting environment. According to Phil Carter, co-owner of Metrolina Mulch Premium Landscape Products, mulch is a vital tool for retaining moisture in plants, trees, and bushes during all times of the year. He said that it protects root systems from extreme temperatures, and controls soil erosion. He said that it even enriches soil upon decomposition, providing important nutrients to the garden that it is protecting.

Carter said that mulch is a great soil amendment, but that certain types were better for different plants. He cited pine bark, and other pine products, as great amendments for acid-loving plants like azalea and rhododendron. According to SFGate, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries grow well in the acidic soil left behind by pine mulch, as do potatoes, garlic, and onion.

Hardwood mulch, which metrolinamulch.com lists as some of its most popular, is described as long-lasting, and resistant to wash-out. Upon decomposition, hardwood mulches will raise the pH of the soil, resulting in a more alkaline environment. Such an environment is conducive to the growth of many herbs, lilacs, and succulents, according to thegardenhelper.com.

Metrolinamulch.com describes their cypress mulch as a decay-resistant, decorative mulch, ideal for use around trees, shrubs, and flower beds. They also offer 100% cypress, soft-landing playground chips, that are certified by the International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Association, and meet all of the safety requirements of the American Society for Testing and Materials, laid out for the public park, school, and church playgrounds.

One of the most visually appealing mulch varieties offered by Metrolina Mulch Premium Landscape Products is their cedar mulch. Beyond its visual appeal, metrolinamulch.com describes the cedar as extremely decay-resistant, saving customers on replacement costs and efforts. The website states that the cedar mulch has insect repellant qualities, and gives off a wonderful aroma.
