Novant Health Psychiatric Recovery and Counseling, Novant Health’s first substance abuse intensive outpatient program in the Charlotte area, is open to adults ages 18 years and older who are seeking treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. This new outpatient program gives individuals the flexibility to live at home, allowing participation in work, school, and other personal obligations while undergoing drug or alcohol rehabilitation.
The program, led by therapist Patsy Shinn, LCSW, LCAS, is located at 1401 Matthews Township Parkway, Suite 320, in Matthews. Services are offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These services are covered by Medicaid and most health insurance providers. Affordable plans are available for self-pay patients.
“Patsy is a solution-oriented, team-focused and innovative therapist who cares about her patients and their families,” said Judy Moore, senior director of behavioral health services. “With the combination of her qualifications and the emphasis she puts on personal care, her patients are in excellent hands.”
Following the initial assessment, qualified participants will receive services primarily through group therapy but will also meet with Shinn individually for enhanced care supporting their goals. Groups are small to ensure a patient-centered environment.
In contrast to inpatient rehabilitation programs, outpatient recovery gives patients the opportunity to apply what they learn in treatment to their real life and start making changes immediately. Using evidenced-based treatment approaches, the program also supports engagement in a 12-step program recognizing this as a resource benefiting the individuals’ chances of sustaining long-term recovery.
“My goal with each person is to instill hope,” said Shinn. “I love seeing people realize that a better life is possible and this program will provide a safe, nonjudgmental place to start the journey.”
