Second Round Results:

A.C. Reynolds – 22 Sun Valley – 14

Weddington 33 – South Iredell – 6

The season ends for the Spartans who had a solid season with a 10-3 overall record.  Senior QB Sam Howell had an outstanding season once again, sophomore Gavin Blackwell had over 1100 yards receiving and senior Jack Wilton led the defense with 124 tackles.

Meanwhile, the season continues for the Warriors as they move on to the third round of the 3AA State Championship Playoffs.  Weddington is now 12-1 on the season as they advance to a potential state title.

The Warriors have a potent offense with senior QB Whitner Litton leading the charge, along with senior receiver Max Brimigion and the dynamic duo the Shipley brothers James and Will.  However, defense wins championships and the Warriors are stacked as a defensive football team.  They allowed only 142 total yards in their 48-0 win in the first round of the playoffs dominating Central Cabbarus.  The defense has given up just an average of 12.8 points per game this season and are looking stronger in the playoffs.  Eamon Murphy and Alec Mock both have accumulated 113 tackles, Joseph Zovistoski has contributed 6 sacks and they have multiple players with 2 interceptions.  They are athletic, tough, smart and aggressive which makes them very dangerous.

The defense held South Iredell to only 6 points in the second round on Friday night which clearly shows their dominance and continued stellar performance.  While the offense continues to pick up a lot of yardage and points blowing teams away in the first two rounds.  The Warriors have outscored their first two opponents 81-6.  The competition improves each round a team advances in the tournament, so this is no time for the Warriors to get complacent and they need to keep their momentum and focus on achieving their goal.

The Warriors next opponent will be the No.1 seed undefeated Watauga Pioneers this Friday on the road.  This football game will be a major test for the locals.  Their opponent is a really good team and are well coached. The Warriors stellar defense will need to come to play against an explosive offense.  While offensively Weddington must matriculate the football consistently downfield getting first downs and managing the clock.
