The Sun Valley Spartans men’s lacrosse team, in a year full of firsts, has won their first ever NCHSAA playoff game on friday against the number two Southwest Guilford Cowboys by a score of 10-9.

The Spartans trailed 5-2 at the half after a momentous second quarter from the Cowboys, but Sun Valley made a third quarter run of six unanswered goals to take the lead behind the leadership of all-conference middie Jack Wilton who scored four goals on the night.

The Cowboys tied the game again for a short time but could not break down the defensive wall of Jahzmarr Carr who turned away multiple point-blank shots in the goal to ensure the Spartan victory.  This historic win moves Sun Valley to an all time best of 10-4 on the year.

Through the dedication and guidance of Coach James Payne, the Spartans have earned their first ever winning record in lacrosse.  Coach Payne has more than doubled Sun Valley’s winning percentage in his three short years with the team.  The team has made great strides this year and hopes to continue to do so.  School records broken this year include a record low number of goals against, a record number of saves and ground balls and record percentages across the board.

Sun Valley will face the number one in the state Weddington Warriors on Tuesday for round two of the State Playoffs.
