Dominant performances across multiple sports have earned Marvin Ridge High School the honor of winning the prestigious 2018-2019 Wells Fargo Cup in the NCHSAA 3A classification. The award recognizes, according to the NCHSAA, the schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in their division, decided by a points system.
Points are awarded based on end-of-season standings with 50 points going to the first place finisher in any given sport, second place earning 45, third place earning 40 and so on up to eighth place, in which the team earns 15 points. The schools earn five points for each sanctioned sport in which they participate.
Marvin Ridge ended their sports season with an astounding total of 707.5 points, beating out second place Weddington by 132.5 points. The Marvin Ridge teams earned points in all but one sport. State championship finishes in volleyball and men’s swimming, along with a runner up finish in men’s soccer in the fall and winter, set Marvin Ridge up for victory early on with 145 points before their impressive spring season guaranteed it. The spring season included second place finishes in baseball and men’s tennis and a tied second place finish in women’s lacrosse. Adding to the points were tied third place finishes in softball and men’s lacrosse, an outright third place finish in men’s golf and a fifth place finish in women’s track.
Congratulations to all of the teachers, coaches, parents and students who have helped the Mavericks achieve excellence. Your hard work and dedication surely makes the Tri-W community proud.
