NCHSAA State Tournament: Tri-W Teams Make a Serious Playoff Run

This sports season has seen Tri-W area schools engage in some of the most exciting and surprising competitions in recent memory.  New conference champions were made and school records were broken on multiple occasions.  While this great season is behind us, the post-season promises to bring more of the same as many of our Tri-W area schools prepare for appearances in the NCHSAA state championship playoffs.

Varsity Baseball



Four of our area schools are ready for baseball state playoffs. The new Southern Carolina 3A Conference champions, the Weddington Warriors, have earned an impressive number 7 seed in this year’s tournament.  The Warriors face 26 seed Hickory on Tuesday for round one. 10 seed Marvin Ridge will face 23 seed Erwin.  Cuthbertson finds themselves with the number 19 seed against the 14 seed Southwestern Randolph Cougars.  The Parkwood rebels with the 28 seed face the 5 seed Northern Guilford Nighthawks for round one.

Varsity Softball

Conference champions, the Marvin Ridge Mavericks, have earned the number one seed in 3A state softball playoffs after one of the most dominant seasons in school history.  The Mavericks will face the 32 seed, North Forsyth on Tuesday for round one of the tournament.  Parkwood, with the number 11 seed, faces number 22 Enka.  23 seed Cuthbertson will face 10 seed A.L. Brown. Sun Valley is seeded number 30 against three seed West Rowan.

Women’s Soccer

The women of Marvin Ridge have made a major impact on the sports scene this year in multiple sports.  The Mavericks women’s soccer team has earned another number one seed for the school in the 3A state playoffs.  They are confident to see a round two appearance as they face off against the number 32 seed Central Cabarrus on Tuesday for round one.  28 seed Parkwood faces number 5 Northern Guilford.  19 seed Sun Valley will play 14 seed Mount Tabor.  The Weddington Warriors have the number 20 seed and will play against 13 seed Watauga. Cuthbertson will have the 18 seed against number 15 Crest.

Men’s Lacrosse

Several area teams are set to compete in men’s lacrosse state playoffs.  Cuthbertson, Sun Valley and Marvin Ridge all enter the tournament with wildcard slots while number one in the state Weddington enters with a number one seed.  Cuthbertson was eliminated in round one by Mount Tabor with a score of 15-7.  Marvin Ridge has defeated two seed Patton 26-6 in round one.  They will play Lake Norman Charter for round two.  Sun Valley defeated Southwest Guilford 10-9.  They will face the Weddington Warriors in round two.  The Warriors enter round two off of a dominant victory over Pine Lake Prep with a score of 21-4
