J.J. Benton Parkwood running back scored two touchdowns and had 90 yards rushing in the Rebels’ 64-0 win over CATA.

Caleb Deveaux Marvin Ridge running back carried 13 times for 120 yards and one touchdown in the Mavericks’ 33-19 win against South Mecklenburg.

Sam Howell Sun Valley quarterback accounted for seven touchdowns in the Spartans 62-20 win over Forest Hills. Howell tossed five touchdown passes and ran for two more scores.

Whitner Litton Weddington High quarterback was 10-of-19 passing for 198 yards and two touchdowns as the Warriors defeated Ardrey Kell 28-0.

Bryce McLain Marvin Ridge quarterback rushed for 120 yards and was 9-of-16 passing for 97 yards and two touchdowns in the Mavericks 33-19 win against South Mecklenburg.

Will Shipley Weddington High caught two passes for 70 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown catch and run. The freshman also rushed five times for 34 yards.

Jason Stricker Marvin Ridge kicker kicked all five of his kickoffs for touchbacks in the Mavericks’ 33-19 win against South Mecklenburg.

Chase Turner Weddington High intercepted an Ardrey Kell pass in the Warriors’ end zone and he also blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt.

Davis Walker Cuthbertson High quarterback threw three touchdown passes in the second half in the Cavaliers’ 27-20 loss to Porter Ridge.

Myles Wallace Cuthbertson High rushed for almost 100 yards in the Cavaliers’ loss to Porter Ridge.


Carly Owens Marvin Ridge senior had 33 kills and seven aces as the Mavs opened the season with two victories.

Alicia Davis Weddington High sophomore had 16 kills, 29 digs, four blocks and two assists in the Warriors season-opening loss to Ardrey Kell.

Mikayla Goodall Cuthbertson High junior had 12 aces in the Cavaliers’ 3-0 win over Porter Ridge in the season opener.

Cross Country

Andrew Kiss Cuthbertson won the CXC Summer Invite with a time of 16:52.67 as the Cavaliers finished in first place.

Sarah LaTour Cuthbertson won the CXC Summer Invite girls’ race in a time of 18:51.33. CHS won the girls’ race with 18 points.

Nielsen was a sports writer for what is now the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for nearly 32 years before moving to North Carolina in February 2016. At the Democrat-Gazette, Nielsen's primary responsibility was beat coverage for Rogers High School. Rogers is a Class 7A school located in Northwest Arkansas.
Nielsen, a University of Arkansas graduate, covered the Northwest Arkansas Naturals Minor League Baseball team from 2008-2015. The Naturals are the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
Nielsen has experience covering University of Arkansas athletics, including NCAA Tournament basketball games and several football bowl games. He also covered amateur and professional golf tournaments in Northwest Arkansas.
