As just one Tri-W team remains in the running for a football state title, wrestling and basketball have taken over the scene as tournaments unfold and intense games ensue. Teams have had the opportunity to see their upcoming opponents in action as the competition heats up around the Tri-W area. Here is a look at the week in winter sports, and what’s to come.

As the hosts of the Roughedge Wrestling Tournament, Parkwood was able to acquire two gold medals and several other placing finishes on their home turf. The Women’s basketball team at Parkwood earned a 60-34 win against Fort Mill this week at the Milltown Basketball Classic. Rebel basketball will resume December 3 against Forest Hills, followed by games against Harding University High School on December 4.

As the last Tri-W team competing for the state championship title, Weddington football will play against Watauga on Friday. Sun Valley

The Sun Valley men’s basketball team earned a last-minute victory against Porter Ridge this week. With just 10 seconds left to play, the game was tied 63-63. With possession of the ball, the Spartans drove down the court, missing twice and recovering their own rebound both times. Finally, as the clock ran out, the Spartans put up their third shot of the possession, sinking the bucket and winning the game 65-63. Basketball will resume against Hickory Ridge on December 6. The Spartan wrestling squad will participate in the Jim Hayes Invitational at East Meck on December 7.
