
As just one Tri-W team remains in the running for a football state title, wrestling and basketball have taken over the scene as tournaments unfold and intense games ensue. Teams have had the opportunity to see their upcoming opponents in action as the competition heats up around the Tri-W area. Here is a look at the week in winter sports, and what’s to come.
Parkwood
As the hosts of the Roughedge Wrestling Tournament, Parkwood was able to acquire two gold medals and several other placing finishes on their home turf. The Women’s basketball team at Parkwood earned a 60-34 win against Fort Mill this week at the Milltown Basketball Classic. Rebel basketball will resume December 3 against Forest Hills, followed by games against Harding University High School on December 4.

Cuthbertson
The women’s basketball team earned a 51-50 double overtime win on the road this week against Ardrey Kell. The next series of games for Cuthbertson basketball will be held at home against Forest Hills. The Cuthbertson swim and dive team will have a meet on Friday at Wingate, against Piedmont and Parkwood. Cuthbertson wrestling will host the Cavalier Crush tournament on December 7.

Weddington
As the last Tri-W team competing for the state championship title, Weddington football will play against Watauga on Friday. Watauga is the last opponent standing between the Warriors and their shot at a repeat state title. The Warriors earned big wins in men’s and women’s basketball this week. The women’s basketball team won 64-54 against Hickory Ridge. The men’s team defeated Hickory Ridge 76-63. Weddington basketball will resume play against the Concord Spiders on December 3.
Sun Valley
The Sun Valley men’s basketball team earned a last-minute victory against Porter Ridge this week. With just 10 seconds left to play, the game was tied 63-63. With possession of the ball, the Spartans drove down the court, missing twice and recovering their own rebound both times. Finally, as the clock ran out, the Spartans put up their third shot of the possession, sinking the bucket and winning the game 65-63. Basketball will resume against Hickory Ridge on December 6. The Spartan wrestling squad will participate in the Jim Hayes Invitational at East Meck on December 7.
Marvin Ridge
The swim and dive team at Marvin Ridge earned decisive wins over Weddington this week in both the men’s and women’s divisions. The men’s basketball team won 62-50 over Carolina Forest, out of Myrtle Beach. The Mavericks will resume basketball this week at home against Ardrey Kell. Marvin Ridge wrestling will participate in the Jim Hayes Invitational at East Meck on Saturday, December 7
