This Week’s Tri-W Sports Highlights

Postseason play has begun for many sports in the Tri-W area, and the competition is heated. Football is entering its final weeks and teams are beginning to settle into their playoff positions. With just a few weeks of fall sports left in the 2019 season, the hard work of Tri-W teams is paying off in full force. Here is a look at a few of the big performances from this week.

Cuthbertson



The varsity soccer team at Cuthbertson earned a couple of important conference wins this week. The Cavaliers shut out Piedmont in a 6-0 win. They followed up with a 4-1 victory over Parkwood at home. Cuthbertson football found success this week in a 31-21 home conference win over Sun Valley. Varsity volleyball won three sets to one over Charlotte Catholic in a conference tournament match.

Parkwood

The Rebels’ varsity soccer team is 10-7 on the year after defeating Piedmont 6-3 in a home conference match-up. Parkwood will face the 10-8-1 Cuthbertson Cavaliers for their next conference match-up. The Rebels are 6-7 in conference play.

Sun Valley

The volleyball team at Sun Valley has been a shining light for the school’s athletic program this year, and this week was no different. The Spartans earned a three-set win over Parkwood in a conference tournament match. They followed up with a three-set win over Kings Mountain in Saturday’s state playoff match. The Spartans are 24-4 on the year.

Marvin Ridge

The varsity volleyball and soccer teams dominated the scene this week for Marvin Ridge. The volleyball team won 3-0 in conference tournament play against Cuthbertson and bested Weddington 3-1. The Mavericks opened their postseason run with a three-set win over East Rowan on Saturday. The varsity soccer team opened their week with a 1-0 win at Weddington and followed with a 4-1 win at home over Sun Valley.

Weddington 

The Warrior football program is undefeated at 9-0 after a 52-7 win over conference rival Marvin Ridge on Friday. Weddington soccer moves to 7-9-2 on the season after a 9-0 blowout at Piedmont. The Warriors scored three in the first half and an astounding six in the second. Weddington is 6-6 in conference play. They will face off against 10-8-1 Cuthbertson on Wednesday for a conference match-up.
